Core Values in a Strategic Plan

The core values of your organization are the boundaries in which must exist.  These are the beliefs you hold most dear.  The absolute truths for your organization.

Core values when used in conjunction with mission, allow the governance and staff leadership of an organization to confidently move forward.  Core values bring clarity to decision making, protect the resources of the organization from being misused, and allow those who share your beliefs to confidently support your organization.

If you ever find yourself operating outside your core values, then you are no longer the same organization.

To begin consideration of your core values, or to refine core values that have not been duly clarified, begin with these questions:

  1. What will we ALWAYS do?

  2. What will we NEVER do?

The absolute nature of these questions is critical.  As core values, should be limited to only what is Core, and unwavering to the organization.  It is not a list of how things currently operate.

The exercise of defining core values will help your organization move away from implied reality, and open new horizons for the organization.
